or you follow the dictum- Choose to be Happy!
The diving and coming to surface are very often selected by us. Yet we complain when we don't have the control over circumstantial reactions towards our existence. One desires to prove-collect evidences that the breathing is not just a mechanical affair-rather the person who is making this in-out of the O-Co2, carries something called 'potential. The urge to establish the presence, be it through working, not working or it is through the violent expressions. We amend ourselves a lot, making a precise strategy to have a comfortable stay.
WE are imperative-relative to our surroundings. This does not mean that our surroundings act upon us. Probably most of us have this notion about surroundings and we tend to keep this belief. It gives us a safeguard against any fall, any question or even a failure. We pass the buck to circumstances and to surroundings.
Happiness is, somehow, a by product of this 'adaptability' to 'nature'.

Utilization of the self is a very tactful matter and our mind reciprocates-I don't mean reacts or responds. And this reciprocation is not because one has thought of the world around and wants to return the favours. It is the SELFIE! My surrounding are not the geographic-demographic entities that come my way every day. Though, I can not reject that there is no thing called surroundings. I do not deny that their is nothing between Happiness and Surroundings. There is a give and take in these two.
But we need to open our mind radar to make the term surroundings more comprehensive or very objective. This is sure that we need to take one side. Taking sides is very crucial in understanding the impact of the 'neighbourhood'.
Things that you remember-remember-respect-repeat are the ones that matter to you. Surrounding is decided by you. The Hindi word "SANGAT (संगत)" corresponds to the term companionship or bit of neigbourhood that someone keeps or has. When we see into this Hindi word and relate it to Surroundings and thereafter to Happiness,we find something well felt-well known-least shared.
